Rabbi Alan Freedman

Rabbi Alan Freedman joined Temple Beth Shalom as its first full-time rabbi in July 2002. In addition to serving as senior rabbi at Temple Beth Shalom, Rabbi Freedman is committed to working within the interfaith community to advance religious values and to teach. 

His community activities include being the co-chair of the Clergy Advisory Committee for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas as well as being a past-chair of the PPGT Board of Directors. He is an active member of Austin Interfaith and a past board member of IAct. Rabbi Freedman also serves on the Ethics Committee for the St. David’s hospital system and teaches in the NOVA and SAGE programs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a past president of the Southwest Association of Reform Rabbis and is a member of the Rabbinic Cabinet for Israel Bonds.

Rabbi Freedman was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. He also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an undergraduate degree from The George Washington University. 

Before ordination, Rabbi Freedman was a student rabbi at Temple Shalom in Quincy, Illinois, and was the rabbinic intern for two years at Rockdale Temple in Cincinnati, Ohio.
