The focus of study in seventh grade is "Why Be Jewish?"

Goals:
  • To spark a positive Jewish identity
  • To create long-lasting Jewish friendships
  • To reflect on their own identity as Jews.
  • To extrapolate their own practice as adult Jews from the material they’ve studied.
  • To make connections between universal themes related to democracy, citizenship, racism, and antisemitism that Holocaust history raises and the world they live in today. Understand their responsibilities as citizens of the world to make choices that help bring about a more human, just, and compassionate world.
Subjects Covered:
Why Be Jewish: What's the point of living Jewishly? What ideas, beliefs and practices are involved? Why do Jews believe as they do? What do "I" believe as a Jew? This year we will explore what it means to you to be Jewish. Should you belong to a synagogue?  Should you celebrate the Jewish holidays? What does it mean to keep kosher?  Should you believe in God? We will be answering all of these questions--but watch out-you may find your opinions changing.  See you there!

Holocaust and Human Behavior: Holocaust and Human Behavior, through Facing History and Ourselves, uses a unique methodology to lead learners through an examination of the history of the Holocaust, while fostering their skills in ethical reasoning, critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement. By focusing on the choices of individuals who experienced this history—through primary sources, eyewitness testimonies, personal reflections, poetry, and images—students are given a lens to thoughtfully examine the universal themes and questions about human behavior inherent in a study of the Holocaust. Students are also prompted to draw connections between history and the world today.
