Exploration of the Prayerbook Part 2

Part 1: Friday night service and Shema section [Starting January 10th-10 sessions]
Part 2: Saturday morning service and Tefillah section [Starting April 18th-10 sessions]
Students can register for either or both; Part 1 is not a prerequisite for Part 2.
This class is open to both readers and non-readers of Hebrew!
This class will be useful both for those who've had Intro to Judaism: Liturgy, and those who haven't.

Are you ready to get deeper into the meaning of prayer? This class explores the details of Hebrew prayer either in the original or transliteration--you can read along in either alphabet. For those who've had the Liturgy section of the Intro to Judaism class, this class goes into more detail, and focuses on the Hebrew. The class also covers the special features of our prayerbook, Mishkan Tefilah, and choreography and common melodies of basic prayers at TBS.

We will examine the meaning of prayer as found in:
--basic vocabulary and grammar
--order of and inter-relationships between the prayers
--Jewish history revealed in prayers and the history of the prayerbook
--Reform Judaism's philosophy as seen in changes and choices in our prayerbook

The first class focuses on Friday night prayers and the Shema prayers. The second class covers Saturday morning prayers and the Tefillah section, the Torah service, and as time allows, holiday Hebrew.
