Second graders continue to study holidays, community, and prayers and blessings, as they did in kindergarten and first grade, but now focus on a few new topics as well.
 
Goals:
  • To promote a basic knowledge of and a love for the Land of Israel
  • To explore Jewish holidays and the way they are celebrated around the world, and especially in Israel.
  • To introduce Hebrew reading skills and a basic Hebrew vocabulary
Subjects Covered:
  • Israel: Second grade learners develop a love for and an appreciation of the Land of Israel. Learners are introduced to Israel's cities, her people, and her customs. Lessons are reinforced by hands-on activities, crafts, videos, and cooking.
  • Jewish Holidays: As second graders, learners continue their exploration of Jewish holidays by focusing on how different Jewish groups such Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrachi Jews have their own customs for each holiday.
  • Hebrew Reading Readiness: In second grade, learners are introduced to the Hebrew alphabet, the sounds each letter makes, basic Hebrew vocabulary as well as participate in the Hebrew Through Movement program.
Additional Specialties and Programs:
  • Consecration for all of new 2nd graders.
  • Mitzvapalooza! A day of families giving back to our community together.
  • Weekly visits from the Music Program Associate.
  • Visits from the Temple Beth Shalom clergy.
  • Tiny TABSY (Youth Group) events like Superhero Night, Lego! Chanukah, Mad Scientist Night.
