Hebrew Program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders

Hebrew is the language of the Jewish people. It is the language of the Torah, the language of our prayers, and the language spoken in our homeland, Israel. Hebrew language is part of the curriculum at Temple Beth Shalom from kindergarten through high school, whether it is learning the Hebrew aleph-bet (alphabet), prayers, or vocabulary used in Israel today.

  • The Hebrew Aleph-Bet and Modern Hebrew are introduced to our 2nd graders during Sunday Religious School as part of our Israel curriculum through Hebrew-Through-Movement, an interactive program based on the latest brain research on learning.
  • In the 3rd grade, students begin attending mid-week Hebrew school.
  • Our 4th-6th graders learn the prayers that are part of our daily, Shabbat, and holiday observances. At Temple Beth Shalom we enable students to understand the service liturgy and to develop into capable adults who feel comfortable praying in any Jewish setting and leading services in a Reform Jewish context.

Structure & Options

Hebrew is offered many times during the week. One session is required of all students enrolled in our 3rd-6th grade program as part of Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation. There is an optional 7th grade class. T'filah (prayer) and direct instruction take place each week during Hebrew School at the temple. All students enrolled in Hebrew School are also expected to attend our Sunday Religious School.

The Hebrew School sessions offered in 5779 are:

  • Monday afternoons at satellite locations (available for students in grades 3-6). Locations are Steiner Ranch, Circle C, Round Rock area, South-Central area, and East-Central Austin.Exact times and exact locations to be determined as the school year approaches.
  • Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 p.m. OR 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday afternoons from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Curriculum
Our self-paced approach to Hebrew makes our program unique. We allow students to progress at a rate that is comfortable for them.
In 3rd grade, students work closely with their teacher and classmates to learn the Hebrew aleph-bet sounds, vowels, and the important decoding skills that will help them be successful throughout Hebrew school. Throughout the year, students will learn to read and translate key blessings in our tradition such as the short Kiddush (borei p'ri ha-gafen), the Motzi and the prayer said when lighting the Chanukah menorah.

As students progress past the aleph-bet class, our 4th-6th graders are able to work at their own pace to learn prayers-practicing reading, studying vocabulary, and doing activities that help teach deeper meaning.
