Tikkun Olam
Our Temple community takes the directive to Change the World  very seriously. Through our Caring Community, we take care of each other. Our children learn about Social Action at a young age through ongoing Mitzvah Projects that are often part of Religious or Hebrew School. We are regular participants in Austin community-wide Social Action projects such as Meals on Wheels and Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and our reach is even greater through our participation in Women's Storybook Project of Texas. Please read further in this section to learn more about our commitment to Tikkun Olam.
High Holy Day - Capital Area Food Bank Donations

Let's start our High Holy Day Tzedakah season early. Just imagine if every member family were to contribute the cost of a day's meals or a restaurant outing to help fellow Texans in need be able to eat tomorrow .

The most cost effective way to help the food bank is to contribute money. So, like last year, we're set to conduct a virtual food drive. That is, the Capital Area Food Bank has created a secure web site, customized for our congregation, to make direct on-line contributions. In this fashion, the Food Bank can buy what is needed in large quantities and deliver the goods very quickly. With the needs magnified, please plan to donate generously like you have in the past. The link for online giving is here - Donate NOW

Over the last three years, Temple Beth Shalom members contributed over $20,000 to this worthy cause. We'd love to extend that fabulous record. Thanks for your consideration!

Coupon Tzedakah Project
Please help us with our newest Tzedakah project! Our congregation is collecting coupons for its members who can benefit from this type of financial assistance. Please cut coupons for groceries, diapers, health and beauty supplies, pet supplies, fast food, etc. Please ask your doctors to give you drug discount coupons to donate. Physicians, please remember that no one can use a discount coupon without a prescription, so please donate your extra coupons.

Bring your coupons to Shabbat Services, Religious School, Hebrew School or Torah Study and deposit them in the blue boxes labeled "For Coupon Exchange." Parents, get your kids to help cut coupons!

Those who wish to pick up coupons for their personal or family use may take what they can use from the lavender-colored accordian file outside the Temple office. You may take as many coupons as often as you want but please leave the file!

If you have questions or suggestions to improve this project, please contact Ellen Marcus at esmarcus@gmail.com or 713-828-0518.

New Advancements in HIV Prevention

Two new items are under consideration by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that could reduce the number of HIV infections: Last week, a panel of experts recommended that the FDA approve a pill known as Truvada that could be taken preemptively by healthy but at-risk individuals to prevent the contraction of HIV. The pill [...]

Colorado Day of Prayer Ruled Unconstitutional

From 2004 to 2009, Colorado’s sitting governors issued proclamations for a statewide Day of Prayer, to be held the first Thursday of May. The proclamations included biblical passages and a call to prayer. But last week, a three-judge panel on the Colorado Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the proclamations invalid, holding that when a state [...]

UPDATE: House Passes a VAWA that Does Not Protect All Victims

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to pass a version of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization that prioritizes some victims over others and politicizes the safety and well-being of victims of abuse. I could not have predicted that a bill called the Violence Against Women Act would actually put victims of domestic abuse and [...]

Emerging Crisis in Student Debt Rates

On July 1, the interest rates on government-subsidized Stafford loans, which help students pay for college, are set to double, from 3.4 to 6.8 percent. Though some calculations note that the cost per month would only increase by around $6, the rate change has triggered a larger national debate about the staggering levels of debt [...]

UPDATE: New Israeli Coalition Could Leave Room for Peace

Last week when Kadima joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, I questioned whether a near-unanimity government would either allow Kadima to bring Netanyahu’s government further to the center of the political spectrum or silence healthy political discourse. At the beginning of this week, I was encouraged to see that Prime Minister Netanyahu had a [...]
