GALA
UPDATE AND THANKS FROM CO-PRESIDENT, STEVE
GELLMAN
**********************************************************************************************
It was a night to
remember! Our first gala was beautiful, elegant, and
fun. It was an unbelievable success. Attended by 280
people, about half of whom were non-Temple members, we received
tremendous community support at all levels. Everything went
off without a hitch. The dinner was great, dessert was a
surprise, the dancing got crazy, and the silent auction was a big
hit. The night was also important for our Temple in that it
showed the community what Temple Beth Shalom can do.
Our Temple raised approximately $55,000 from
our Gala! This is a very impressive number, far exceeding our
line item on the budget. The financial success is a
result of lots of hard work by a large number of TBS members.
It was great to witness so many people working so hard for so long
for this very special evening.
A very big Todah Rabah goes out to Marion
Werner, our Event Chair, who oversaw countless details from morning
til night...to Fundraising Chairs Sandy Dochen and Laraine
Lasdon...to Publicity Chair Ron Klayman...to Raffle Chair Charles
Wolchansky, to Reservations Chair Dee Coplin...to Silent
Auction and Raffle Co-Chairs Andie Allen and Lis Chozick...to Silent
Auction Arrangements Chair Joan Edelstein..to Table Decorations
Chair Irene Parker...to Telephone Chair Dale Rubinfeld...to Program
Booklet Chairs Traci Grossfeld and Lori Weinbach. All these
folks put in countless hours to perform their jobs, and each one of
them was fantastic. Thank you to each one of
you.
Obviously, there was a big
supporting cast to get the job done. Each of these
members also contributed much to the success of the evening and
deserves our thanks:
Arnie Allen, Lisa Apfelberg, Eddie Astrich,
John Balis, Merry Balis, Mort Batlan, Fred Chozick, Judith Clack,
Eric Cohan, Sharon Cohan, Don Coplin, Mike Deitch, Carol Dochen,

We thank each one of these members for their
very important and meaningful contribution of their
time. A special thank you also goes out to our Office

after the evening.

with the convention being "right in our backyard" a short drive down
I-35 in San Antonio. It will be an amazing learning experience with
opportunities to attend seminars on a wide range of topics and to
listen to national figures from the Reform movement. You'll
also celebrate Shabbat with hundreds of other Jews from around our
region. For more information please call Lynne or Steve
Gellman at 345-1566, or call the URJ toll-free at (888)

hotel. There are options of attending single days and not the
entire weekend at a reduced amount. TBS has funds available to help
defray the cost of attending. The amount available will depend on
the number we have attending. For information on funding, please

First Sisterhood
Quarterly Meeting
Wednesday, November 3, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
(please note date change!!)
Please join us at our very first Sisterhood Quarterly Meeting at
the home of Lisa Goodman, as we invite Rabbi Freedman to speak to us
about bringing the observance of Shabbat into our homes.
If observing Shabbat in your home is something you have been
wanting to do but felt too overwhelmed with the thought of having
one more thing "to do" in your busy week, then this meeting is for
you! Rabbi Freedman will dispel many beliefs about how Shabbat has
to be done and he will offer simple and easy ways to implement it in
our homes. You will leave the meeting with a fresh perspective on
how you can begin to include this joyful and renewing practice in
your life and hopefully feel
inspired and able to do so!
Please RSVP to Stephanie Puente at spuente@aol.com if you are able to
attend. You can also call her at 261-5176 if you have any questions.
Directions to Lisa's home will be sent out closer to the meeting
date.

EDUCATIONAL SERIES: 350 Years of Jews
in America
Oct 26, Nov 6, Nov 16 7:30-9:00 PM
Location:
ECP Multi-purpose Room
This year marks the 350th anniversary of the arrival of the first
Jews in the colony of New Amsterdam. This 3 part seminar, taught by
Rabbi Freedman, will highlight some early Jewish-American
experiences as well as later events in American-Jewish history. We
will begin with the colonial period, then address the 19th and 20th
centuries respectively. We will also evaluate the current state of
the American-Jewish community in our final session. The Jewish
experience in America is wide-ranging and varied, so this promises
to be an evening combining study and sharing about the experience of
our own families in America as well.

ACTION COMMITTEE

The Social Action Committee reminds you to get out to vote on
November 2nd, 2004. At stake are numerous local, state and
federal elections. Those we elect will decide issues of
concern to American Jews in the coming years. Please be sure to cast
your vote. Every vote can make a difference!
The Temple Beth Shalom Meals on Wheels project is looking for a
coordinator. The coordinator position involves setting up the
rotating Wednesday delivery schedule and being a back-up delivery
person. The coordinator could be someone already on the
delivery schedule or someone interested in joining in. There
is nothing like the feeling you get after making your rounds! Please
contact current chairperson, Lois Goodman at loisgoodman@Austin.rr.com
for more information.
Did you remember to send in your Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB)
donation? If you have an envelope from the High Holidays, it
is not too late to send it in. CAFB distributes more than 12.5
million pounds of food and grocery products each year. These items
serve more than 340 non-profit human and social service partner
agencies. Nearly 88% of every dollar donated to CAFB is reinvested
into Food Bank programs. For more information about the Capital Area
