Parasha R'eih (Deuteronomy
11:26-16:17) Each week, in addition to the Torah portion, we traditionally read a Haftorah portion, that is a reading from the second section of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) known as Nitzevim or Prophets. These supplemental readings are not chosen at random but rather are selected either to re-enforce a theme of that week's Torah portion or in response to the Hebrew festival calendar. This week we read the third of seven Haftorot of Consolation. Having recently observed Tisha B'Av, the day which marks the destruction of both the First and Second Temples, we are now in a period where each week we read a passage from the Prophets assuring us that despite destruction and exile, the Jewish people will flourish in the end. This week, we are consoled by an excerpt from Isaiah, a verse of which reads "And all your children shall be disciples of the Lord, and great shall be the happiness of your children." This verse is particularly striking with our community having just completed hosting the Maccabi Games. Children from around the nation and Israel were welcomed by our many host families, they were fed, they were transported, they were cheered and they were consoled. Like many of you, Lori and I housed four delightful young women, two from Atlanta and two from Nashville. Their presence not only gave us the opportunity to familiarize them with the wonders of Austin, it gave us a glimpse into the Jewish future. These young people came together to say that it is important to them not only to demonstrate their athletic prowess but to do so in a Jewish context. Their week included tzedakah projects as well as competition and social events. They conducted themselves in a way that reflected Jewish values and while they would probably not put it this way, they acted as "disciples of the Lord", for they wove a wonderful tapestry of their Jewish, athletic and social selves into a true gift of joy that they gave to each other and to our community. We are thankful for the efforts of many hundreds of host families and volunteers. The collective impact of the efforts of all those who contritbuted to the success of these Games was staggering as the Austin Jewish community accomplished once again something that is usually associated with cities much larger than Austin. It would be impossible to name and thank even all those who led in this effort (many of whom I am proud to say were TBS members) but particular kudos go out to Shelly Zausmer and Janet Elam, not only for their tireless work in leading this effort but as symbols of what an effective lay-professional partnership can accomplish. These two women, and those they led, exemplify the best that the Austin Jewish community has to offer and we thank them, and all those who contributed to the success of these Games, for bringing about the fulfillment of the words of Isaih, for great indeed was the happiness of our children.
