Social Action Committee

We are a very busy, involved congregation Beth Shalom, offering a variety of projects for our congregants to fulfill the commandment of Tzedakah. Contact the coordinators of programs which interest you. Please get involved soon! It is a great way to meet our members and help our community.  For further information about the Social Action Committee of Temple Beth Shalom, please contact Kimberly Levinson

Susan G. Komen for the Cure - 2009 Race for the Cure® The race is set for Sunday, November 1. You may know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. What you may not know is that you can help these women and thousands of others in the fight against breast cancer. 2009 will mark the 12th Annual Komen Race for the Cure® in Austin, Texas. The money raised through the Race funds vital education, screening and treatment programs for underserved women in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties and support the national search for a cure. Check back for further information on Temple Beth Shalom's 2009 Race for the Cure Team! Better yet, check with the Social Action Committee about how to help out. Contact Bob Batlan

Tzedakah Boxes Our congregation distributes the silver boxes at Shabbat Services and Sunday School. Funds collected are used for Social Action projects of Temple Beth Shalom. Pick up a can and bring it back full of coins. Then grab a receipt for taxes--and get a new, empty box to fill! Contact Janis Delman

Slovakia Pen Pals Our member, Ron Klayman, has introduced this great Pen Pal project to the Temple Beth Shalom Religious School with Jewish students in Slovakia. We will post letters as they arrive! If your child receives a pen pal letter at your home email address be sure to share it with us! Contact Ron Klayman

Meals on Wheels Please join us as our volunteers donate their time every Wednesday to deliver meals to 8-10 homebound elderly, disabled, and needy individuals off Ohlen Rd. Our clients are very special people. Providing hot meals to people who would otherwise go without is a great way to give back to the community. If you would like to help with Meals on Wheels, please contact Stacy Mendelson by email or by phone at 458-4140.

Undercover Project Start buying packages of men's underwear and socks and save gently-worn towels. Soon we will collect them for distribution to our city's homeless population. Contact Janis Delman.

Story Book Project We are looking for more volunteers to tape record resident mothers in prisons reading stories to their children. The recordings and the books are mailed to the children. Women’s Storybook Project of Texas is not only volunteering at 4 of the 6 facilities now at Gatesville Prison, but we have expanded to Houston as well. Please consider donating your time to this wonderful and rewarding project. Contact Judy Fox by email or call 292-4115 if you wish to volunteer or need more information.
